Gros Morne is located in the North Atlantic Ocean of Martinique. A former parish attached to that of Trinité, the commune of Le Gros-Morne is essentially rural and devoted to agriculture. It is one of the ten largest communes (in volume) of Martinique after Fort-de-France, Lamentin, Schoelcher, Sainte-Marie, François, Saint-Joseph, Rivière, Pilote, Trinité and Ducos.
The main current crops are sugar cane, banana and pineapple to which are added a few farms growing food crops such as cabbage, carrot, turnip, lettuce, tomato. Gros Morne was populated by the Kalinagos, the Caribbean Amerindian population. The government attached the region to the parish of Trinity.
Discover the church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Visitation; a rectangular nave with three naves extended by a narrower choir makes up the monument. A stone sacristy of rectangular plan grafted to the apse in the extension of the choir characterizes the church.
For rum lovers, visit the distillery of the house of Saint Etienne. Its white rum makes its notoriety, it is the favorite drink of the inhabitants of this island. They started the dwelling was born at the beginning of the XIX century. The history of HSE rum goes back to the 19th century. The Habitation Saint-Etienne was built on the estate of “La Maugée”, a former sugar factory. This impressive territory, of more than 400 hectares, stretches from Gros-Morne to Saint-Joseph. With its plantations, the main mansion, the distillery and the old workers’ huts, is typical of the housing system of Martinique.
At the very beginning it was intended to be a sugar house. In 1852, the owner transformed it into a distillery. This historical place will allow you to discover the history of Man and the joy of living.
