Schœlcher

The municipality of the Fort-de-France conurbation, the town of Schœlcher is located on the west Caribbean coast of Martinique. It is the university town of the island, the fourth most populated commune. Formerly named Case Navire because of its sublime bay which protected “the boats from the wrath of the sea”. This agglomeration was created in the 18th century and was one of the favorite places of the first French settlers “attracted” by the beauty of its bay. It became a commune in 1888 and recovered in 1889 one of the “heroes”, often called the “heroes” of the West Indies, who obtained and signed the abolition of slavery: Victor Schoelcher.

Its inhabitants are the Schoelcherois and the Schoelcheroises. Schœlcher was not always called “Case-Navire” until 1889, when it was renamed in honor of Victor Schœlcher. Journalist, art critic and politician, in 1848 he presided over the Commission for the Abolition of Slavery in the French colonies which prepared the abolitionist decrees of April 27.

Not far from the town, escape to landscapes sometimes paradisiacal at the beach of Madiana, open to the Bay of Fort-de-France, sometimes wild and tropical with the Didier waterfall.
