Le Vauclin is a fishing village located in the southeast of Martinique. It is also the first fishing port on the island, and one of the last lands of Martinique to be colonized by the French. The majority of the towns surrounding Vauclin are within a perimeter of 5 to 10 km maximum. This is the case for an example of the following cities:

  • Rivière-Pilote is 5.8 km away.
  • Le Marin is about 6.6 km away.
  • The town of Saint-Esprit is accessible after about 7.1 km.
  • Le François is 8.6 km away
  • Sainte-Luce is 11.5 km away

The name of the town comes from the Comte de Vauquelin, who strongly participated in the construction of the town’s parish.

The city being relatively isolated, its economy is mainly based on fishing and tourism. This became stronger after the cessation of the town’s only sugar factory in 1941. The Vauclin is home to a famous fish market, with a variety of fish to enjoy, to satisfy all tastes. The whole visit can last one day, if you choose to stop and taste the typical dishes of the place.

Vauclin is full of places to visit of great tourist interest and bewitching beaches, including Grand Macabou, Petit Macabou, Anse Grosse Roche or Pointe chaudière. Finally, there is also Pointe Faula, a charming place, ideal for swimming.

The city of Vauclin in 6 questions

What to do or see at Le Vauclin?

  • The Morne Carrière wind power plant (the only wind turbines on the island)
  • The Vauclin Mountain and its Calvary
  • La Pointe Chaudière
  • Bust of Louis-Joseph Landa (Place du Marché)
  • Point Faula and its white background. Protected by a coral reef, Pointe Faula is a very popular beach for Martinique because the sandy bottom is barely covered by a few tens of centimeters of water and sinking from the edge to the White Bottom in the middle of the lagoon, making it possible to reach them on foot. Another advantage of this beach is that its water is one of the warmest in the Caribbean.
  • The beach of Petite Anse Macabou (beginning of the hike “Trace des Caps”)
