The commune of Morne Vert is located in the west of Martinique, 30 minutes by car from Fort-de-France. The commune of 1900 inhabitants is one of the most recent on the island. It has only been recognized as such since 1949. It is a destination that breathes tranquility, in the middle of nature, at the foot of the Pitons du Carbet.

This set of volcanic origin dominates the Caribbean coast from the north of Fort-de-France to Fonds-Saint-Denis. Its five peaks, culminating between 1000 and 1200 meters, offer steep reliefs where the vegetation is lush and dense. Facing this majestic massif, the Morne Vert enjoys a pleasant climate, cooler than on the coast. Perched at an altitude of 400 meters, surrounded by greenery and steep mountainsides, it is nicknamed "Little Switzerland".

What to do in Morne Vert?

Morne Vert lends itself particularly to green and sports tourism. There are several hiking trails in the region. One of the most famous one allows to reach, in three hours, Fonds-Saint-Denis from the Clapet. It is a beautiful walk adapted to families, in the heart of the tropical forest and the clearings of the Canessa plateau. At the beginning of the itinerary, you can make a detour to the Attila spring. This place owes its fame to Etienne Orlé, known as "Attila", who said he drew his strength and energy from this water.

The second hiking trail is reserved for experienced hikers: it is the crossing of the Pitons du Carbet. This itinerary is one of the most sporty in Martinique. It includes the ascent of the piton Boucher, the piton Lacroix (the highest, at 1197 of altitude) and the piton Dumauzé. The pitons of Carbet were born a million years ago, well before Mount Pelee, located further north ("only" 300,000 years old).

This trail requires a good level of sportsmanship and a certain ease in the face of very steep slopes reaching 80%. The route is, from time to time, aerial. Reputedly very difficult, it requires constant attention and can only be done in good weather. This sporty hike must be earned, but the panoramas are extraordinary. You can, among other things, see Mount Pelée, if it is clear, and the bay of Fort-de-France.

The Caribbean coast from Morne Vert

Morne Vert is an ideal stopover to enjoy a mild climate, without going far from the Martinique coast. The town is only ten minutes away from the black sand beach of Le Carbet. Easily accessible, this magnificent cove is also one of the most important of the North Caribbean coast. Along this coastline, there are other coves to discover if you have a rental car to visit Martinique. You can enjoy an unforgettable sunset by the sea, before joining the coolness of Morne Vert.

Not far from there, the garden of the Anse Latouche house and the zoo of Martinique are also must-sees. If you like places full of history and gardens, these are worth a visit. The landscape designer Jean-Philippe Thoze, who also designed the garden of Balata, is at the origin of this magical place.

If you are looking for a bit of freshness during your vacations in Martinique, the Morne Vert is a nice stop. Whether you are fond of hiking or lazing around, the geographical location of this small town in the West Indies is ideal. You can enjoy a lush vegetation, while leaving you the opportunity to appreciate beautiful beaches lined with palm trees.
