Riviere-Pilote is a municipaliy on the island of Martinique, surrounded by the Vauclin, Marin and Sainte-Luce rivers. The first town is about 15 kilometers away, the second is 10 kilometers away, while Sainte-Luce is the closest, only 6 kilometers from Rivière-Pilote.
This southern overseas territory has a very special colonial past. It was a refuge for rebels and brown negroes during the 18th century. It was from Rivière-Pilote that the rebels began the uprising of 1870.
The name of the city has its origin in the name of a Caribbean chief from the 17th century, when the island belonged to the Caribbean settlers, before 1660, when Martinique was divided between the French and the Caribbean. While Case-Pilote was the chief-pilot of the northern region, Riviere-Pilote is that of the south.
The geographic location of Riviere-Pilote makes it a commune essentially oriented towards the agricultural economy (vegetable crops). Those of banana and sugar cane are less present, even if the La Mauny distillery, one of the jewels of Martinique rum, has been established there since 1749. In spite of a narrow seafront, Rivière-Pilote sees the number of its fishermen increasing every year. The pilot municipality has increased the capacity of the port’s boats. Rivière-Pilote is an ambitious municipality. It plans to create one of the largest ecotourism circuits in the West Indies, which will allow the discovery of the main natural sites and the high heritage places of the municipality.
