In 1889, Le Marigot, a small rural commune was created from a section of the commune of Le Lorrain. Its name comes from a swampy wasteland located at the edge of the commune, at the mouth of the river not far from Le Lorrain. It is a flowered commune, full of charm, built in an amphitheatre facing the Atlantic Ocean.
Le Marigot, like its neighbors, draws its richness from the banana culture, this small village is the headquarters of the Community of Agglomerations of Northern Martinique. The commune groups together several distilleries such as the Distillerie Lagrange. Over time, banana cultivation has replaced sugar cane cultivation in the region.
Several dwellings have marked the history of the commune, such as the Habitation Bellevue. The brick and wood monument has left its mark on the local population. The dwelling was built in 1671, it was sold to several owners before finally being sold to the Laguarigue de Meillac family.
In 1923, the family introduced a distillery and then banana cultivation in 1947. Then, in 1976, a fire broke out in the house. Today, we can still admire a burnt part of the historical monument.
While visiting the commune to take advantage of the “Baignoire de Marigot”, it is composed of many hikes allowing you to visit the different districts and to immerse yourself in the cultural heritage of the region. Like the Anse Charpentier hike, this one starts on the beach of Charpentier for a duration of two hours. You can discover a very dense flora, admire the panoramic view, you can also picnic in this place.
