The city of Saint-Joseph is located in the center of Martinique, only a few kilometers from the capital Fort-de-France. The name of the city is inspired by that of its famous church, founded during the 17th century, in 1874. This place is proud of its original architecture, its appearance and its false airs are directly reminiscent of the emblematic monument Notre-Dame de Paris.

St. Joseph’s Church is the largest on the island. Its construction drained a group of inhabitants in this region of Martinique. The building was completed in 1927. The year 2005 was marked by the inauguration of new stained-glass windows.

Official recognition of the city did not take place until 1888 with the settlement of the region. It also coincided with the creation of the commune of Fonds-Saint-Denis.

Over the years, Saint-Joseph has become a peri-urban residential area that attracts the population of central Martinique. Like other cities, Saint-Joseph has experienced a major sugar crisis. This event imposed the diversification of local production. Banana and pineapple crops then evolved. Today, the city’s economy is based mainly on fruit crops, such as bananas and other types of flowers.
