Apart from its paradisiacal beaches, Martinique is full of cultural wonders. And the Habitation Céron confirms it. So go to the north of the island of flowers, in the town of Prêcheur, to visit this former farm. The site is located not far from an elegant beach that bears the same name: Anse Céron.
You will discover, in this sublime domain, old historical buildings, a splendid garden and a famous restaurant. In short, a visit not to be missed during your stay in Martinique!
The Habitation Céron was built in 1658, during the colonial period. At that time, the farm was mainly used for sugar cane cultivation. However, it was also used for the cultivation of manioc and cocoa. Unfortunately, the sugar crisis led to the degradation of this important sugar factory. In 1902, the terrible volcanic eruption of Mount Pelee made things even worse. However, you can still see the old buildings that were used for the production of sugar, cocoa and manioc.
The Habitation Céron is now regularly restored. It has a park of 5 000 m². Inside, the botanical garden has been awarded the " Remarkable Garden " label thanks to its magnificent tree: the zamana.
The estate has opened its doors to the public since the arrival of its new owner. The latter wished to reduce the environmental impact of the house. He then developed several initiatives in order to orient himself towardsagrotourism, such as
Thus, the owner has succeeded in developing the land of the estate. The harvested products are destined for the restaurant, which can then be proud to serve locavore meals.
Whether you are with your family, as a lover or even on your own, this estate will amaze you with its enchanting setting. Walk through the lush rainforest, stroll along the river and stroll through the remarkable garden.
Here, hibiscus, banana flowers and balisiers will intoxicate your nostrils. Take the time to appreciate the scenery, you may see a blue lizard or a hummingbird. But the star of the garden remains the zamana, also called "rain tree". In fact, it was elected the most beautiful tree in France in 2016! This majestic zamana is some three hundred and fifty years old. As for its foliage, it covers almost a hectare!
As you walk along, you will arrive at the heart of a cocoa tree farm. Then, it is in the shop that you will taste the handmade chocolate made on the spot.
At the end of your immersion, don't hesitate to stay in the restaurant. In a bucolic atmosphere, discover a menu with dishes made from ingredients harvested on the estate. The result: a succulent Creole cuisine that respects the planet. The speciality? Crayfish on plancha, a real treat! And to finish your meal, try the famous home-made brownie!
