Overview

An estate in the heart of an old sugar factory

Apart from its paradisiacal beaches, Martinique is full of cultural wonders. And the Habitation Céron confirms it. So go to the north of the island of flowers, in the town of Prêcheur, to visit this former farm. The site is located not far from an elegant beach that bears the same name: Anse Céron.

You will discover, in this sublime domain, old historical buildings, a splendid garden and a famous restaurant. In short, a visit not to be missed during your stay in Martinique!

A site full of history, transformed into a fabulous ecosystem

The Habitation Céron was built in 1658, during the colonial period. At that time, the farm was mainly used for sugar cane cultivation. However, it was also used for the cultivation of manioc and cocoa. Unfortunately, the sugar crisis led to the degradation of this important sugar factory. In 1902, the terrible volcanic eruption of Mount Pelee made things even worse. However, you can still see the old buildings that were used for the production of sugar, cocoa and manioc.

The Habitation Céron is now regularly restored. It has a park of 5 000 m². Inside, the botanical garden has been awarded the " Remarkable Garden " label thanks to its magnificent tree: the zamana.

The estate has opened its doors to the public since the arrival of its new owner. The latter wished to reduce the environmental impact of the house. He then developed several initiatives in order to orient himself towardsagrotourism, such as

  • The installation of crayfish ponds;
  • The rehabilitation of the old cocoa farm by planting many cocoa trees (currently more than 2,000);
  • The transformation of cocoa beans to make exceptional chocolates;
  • The cultivation of fruit trees.

Thus, the owner has succeeded in developing the land of the estate. The harvested products are destined for the restaurant, which can then be proud to serve locavore meals.
