Overview

The Domaine d'Émeraude, in Morne Rouge, is an educational garden located in the Regional Natural Park of Martinique. A few steps away from Mount Pelée, you can enjoy a unique setting to observe the exceptional biodiversity of Martinique. This playful visit, adapted to all audiences, allows you to better understand the tropical species and natural landscapes of the island.

The Domaine d'Émeraude: immersion in the heart of Martinique's vegetation

A few kilometres from the town of Morne Rouge, the Domaine d'Émeraude invites you to explore. It guarantees a real immersion in the heart of nature to discover the diversity and beauty of Martinique's flora. Managed by the Regional Natural Park, it replaces the House of Nature of the Estripault estate since 2011. Five years after its creation, the Domain received the label "Remarkable Garden" awarded by the Ministry of Culture. It is a park which, indeed, deserves to be visited.

The Domaine d'Émeraude is a tribute to the nature of Martinique. It invites you to observe it peacefully to better understand and preserve it. It gathers more than one hundred tropical, endemic and sometimes rare species.

In the park, nature is highlighted, but not staged. It is as you would find it in a space untouched by human presence. It is a sensory journey where you can see, listen, smell and touch.

You will admire the flamboyant tree, an emblematic and majestic tree when in flower. You will hear the singing of the solitary whistler and smell the perfume of the flowers to which this island owes its nickname. If it seduces by its beauty, the Domaine d'Émeraude also has an educational vocation. It introduces you to the local vegetation and teaches you how to protect it. The Domaine prepares you to meet tropical species and natural landscapes from other parts of the island.

A fun and instructive visit for young and old

To guide you in this discovery of the local flora, the Domaine d'Émeraude has four kilometers of trails. There are three easy trails of 15, 30 and 60 minutes respectively, suitable for everyone, allowing you to explore the park. They guide you to the heart of a dense, humid forest where trees, epiphytes and ferns abound. You will see numerous tropical species in their natural environment.

The Domaine d'Émeraude also offers a garden dedicated to medicinal plants. Called "The Garden of Origins", it gathers the plants used in the traditional pharmacopoeia to heal oneself. To begin or end your walk, the Exploration Pavilion is a must. In this enclosed space of 300 m2, fun activities, appreciated by the youngest, complete your visit to the Estate.

You will discover exhibitions dedicated to the flora, fauna and local fruits and vegetables. You will understand the formation of soils, the tropical forest or the unique ecosystem of the mangrove. It is an excellent way to learn before exploring these forests between land and sea, essential for biodiversity. The largest mangrove in Martinique is the one in Génipa Bay, near Fort-de-France. The natural landscapes of the island will then have no more secrets for you. Before leaving this enchanting and soothing setting, you can rest and have a picnic in the shade under the cabins.
