Big game fishing in Martinique
Big game fishing in Martinique is one of the tourist activities not to be missed during a stay on the islan...
The Yole Ronde is a traditional boat of Martinique that was used by fishermen of yesteryear. The boats have long helped the inhabitants of the West Indies to exploit the richness of the marine fauna of the Caribbean. Today, this heritage rich in know-how and ancestral traditions will soon be part of the intangible world heritage of UNESCO.

The Yole Martiniquaise, once the boat of choice for local fishermen, is today a true work of art. Its handling, a real know-how which is solemnly transmitted from generation to generation. And this, in order to preserve the richness of the heritage of the island of Martinique. The Yole is built in solid wood and is often less than 10 meters long. It also has two sails of about 50 square meters each. The Martinique Yawl is typically assembled from planks typical of the island, with a frame that holds them in place. Although a team using a Yole has about 15 people, the boat remains very narrow to preserve its speed. The team will mainly use paddles, wind and current to move around, as the Yole has no keel or rudder.
Martinique has always been a fan of sailboat racing. Although the forms have differed over the years, the Yole Ronde de Martinique tour has survived since its first form in 1966. The four famous Yoles Frisson, Mouette, Étoile and Odyssée decided to go around the island. The event is carried out 2 years in a row then stops, because the difficulties of navigation are too great. It is only in 1984 that the tradition starts again, in the hands of George Brival. It is thanks to his organization that the regatta will succeed in perpetuating itself during all these years. 2020 is the only year since 1984 to have seen the event cancelled. This is of course due to the health crisis of the Covid-19. However, the tradition will start again in August 2021 for an even more exciting adventure!

Before being a race, the Yole is first of all a discipline and a very funny nautical activity! And everyone can learn it and have fun. Young and old, families and friends... there is something for everyone! As sea racing is for professionals and amateurs, as a beginner you can take lessons and take it easy at first.
Baby yawls are canoes made in the traditional way, but smaller. They are only 6 meters long and are the perfect boats to introduce young people to the activity. Mini-yoles are even smaller at only 4 meters long and are designed for the youngest. How cute is that! I told you there was something for everyone. Yawl racing is a typically Martinican sport that you won't find anywhere else in the world.
