Types of restaurants in Martinique

What could be better than a good meal after a day full of discoveries

What could be better than a good meal after a day of excursions and discoveries!

With nearly 800 restaurants, the island of flowers will surprise your taste buds. Its geographical location and its history bring together a cosmopolitan cuisine that will delight lovers of tasty dishes. Whether you're here for a few weeks or for a longer stay, whether you're in an alleyway or near Mount Pelee, here's a quick look at the restaurants in Martinique. Here is another way to travel through typical and varied dishes.

Caribbean cuisine or a taste of the exotic

By visiting the alleys of the market of Fort-de-France you will notice all the richness of the Caribbean cooking. To discover these intoxicating flavours is to discover Martinique. Maracuja, guava, avocado... a world of flavours awaits you! You will certainly have heard of the Féroce, a subtle mixture of avocado, cod and manioc. Or the grilled lobster with its dog sauce, considered as one of the symbols of the local cuisine.

The archipelago integrates a whole culinary culture stemming from its history and neighbouring countries. Like Chez Gato in Tartane, you will come across many restaurants in Martinique specializing in Cajun and Creole, cultures originating from Louisiana. The former, born in the countryside, is composed of cold cuts, rice, onions, celery, green peppers and various aromatic plants. The second, with its urban tendencies, is rich in European, African and South American influences. Gumbo and Colombo will transport you to the Americas.

Asian cuisine

If there is one type of restaurant present in Martinique, it is without question the Asian establishments. Caribbean and Far Eastern cuisine are complementary. They have in common spicy dishes, rice, local and seasonal exotic fruits and vegetables, and sea products are honored.

Whether it is Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese or Korean cuisine, you will have the choice! You will find many generalist or specialized establishments on the whole of the Martinique coast. For an immersion in the land of the rising sun do not hesitate to enter Edenne Sushi, in Le Robert. It will satisfy your appetite for shellfish and traditional sushi. The Bonne Chance in Rivière-Salée gives you the opportunity to taste a famous Korean bibimbap or a Thai green papaya salad. Looking for Vietnamese cuisine? The Hanoi on the edge of Fort-de-France, will make you appreciate a Bun Bo Hue with fish.

Vegetarian, vegan and healthy restaurants

This trip to Martinique is perhaps the opportunity for you to start a diet without meat products. Or maybe you're already in this trend and you're afraid of not having enough to eat. Vegan friends, the island of flowers has not forgotten you! The Caribbean was crossed by the Rastafari movement. This movement has for principles, among others, to be close to nature and to exclude meat from its diet, source according to it of human aggressiveness. In fact, the restaurants of Martinique are sensitive to this. If vegetarianism is one of the foundations of Asian gastronomy, other types of restaurants are specialized in it.

On the Ducos side, you will find at least 5 establishments partially or completely dedicated to this cuisine, such as the Végé'Lib. If you sail to Le Marin, open the doors of the Zanzibar and satiate yourself with a parsnip soup or a codfish accras, one of the most famous dishes of the Caribbean cuisine.

French and European cuisine

If you have a long stay and you miss the tastes of the "old continent", there are restaurants in Martinique specializing in French and European cuisine. Restaurants in Martinique specializing in French, and by extension, European cuisine are not absent.

L'Alsace a Kay, in the town of Saint-Pierre, will serve you a good onion tart or a royal sauerkraut. Cap crêpes, in the Sainte-Anne district, will treat you to Breton crêpes! Here, French gastronomy is well suited to local resources.

Le O vin sur Vingt, in Lamentin, offers exotic dishes such as yellow banana creek with herring and ricotta or zucchini gaspacho with codfish chiquetaille.

Direction Italy! Pizzas or pastas, La Tavola Italiana, located in Fort-de-France, or Poivre et sel in Sainte-Luce, will fill your stomach with home-made dishes. The raviolis are often served alongside mozzarella and cured ham. Naples and Rome are not so far away!

Various cuisines

Other restaurants in Martinique add to the island's gastronomic variety. Hello Beyrouth and Dabkeh, respectively in Ducos and La Trinité, offer Lebanese and Turkish dishes. You will taste Middle Eastern specialities such as fallafel, fatouches and hummus.

Indian and Pakistani cuisines are just as exotic as the local Martinique food can be. In search of sweet and savoury flavours, you can eat naans or samoussas at the Tandoor (Fort-de-France) or the Taste of India (Les Trois-Ilets).

You will also come across some South American restaurants. Among them the Kuba'b, in Sainte-Luce, where tacos, burritos and Mexican fajitas are served. At the Carioca you will taste, among other things, a typical Brazilian fish stew: the moqueca.

The culinary fusion is a creation of dishes with diverse gastronomic origins. Taco Loco, for example, offers French, Mexican and Lebanese cuisine.

Would you like to have an aperitif or a refreshment?

Most of the restaurants in Martinique offer a wide range of drinks. Of course, to accompany the meals, you will have a varied choice of wines from Caribbean, European and even Californian grape varieties. Just as Asian restaurants will not break the traditional rule of sake, in Martinique and the rest of the archipelago, there will be a wide range of cocktails, with or without alcohol. This could not be more normal given the many varieties of exotic fruits available. Coming from the sugar cane production, rum is a specificity of the West Indies known all over the world and sometimes integrated in the dishes. As a lover of fine spirits, it would be a shame to miss such a jewel and leave without having tasted at least once the famous cocktail called " Le planteur " or a local Ti'punch.

Once you arrive on Martinique's soil, you can only notice the richness of this island in the diversity of its natural scenery, its historical wealth and its gastronomic heterogeneity.

Of course, you will remember the panoramas and your adventures for a long time. But sharing a delicious meal, copious and balanced, in the serenity with your entourage is also a way to discover Martinique. It is to know another of its faces, in all intimacy.
